Our Community Hubs Project – SPC and Locality Partnership


Shropshire Council has awarded a grant funding contract to SPC to build capacity within the voluntary and community sector and town and parish councils to take on the management (and sometimes ownership) of community hubs, to include libraries and customer services. SPC will work in partnership with Locality to deliver this starting with free online training on community assets.

Our Community Hubs Overview

The Our Community Hubs project aims to re-design the way that existing “face to face” customer focused services are provided within Shropshire and how people get information and advice that helps them and enables them to help others. Shropshire Council want to ensure that voluntary and community sector organisations and town and parish councils are confident to take on the management of libraries and to develop a range of linked information and guidance services that meet local individual and community aspirations.

Currently lots of diverse activity is provided within Shropshire’s communities by a range of public, Town and Parish council and voluntary organisations. This takes place in a variety of different venues with different access, different branding and different emphasis.

Alongside this the way that people are using services is changing dramatically. Library usage is decreasing but Shropshire’s rising older population is putting unsustainable demands on health and social care services.

Investment in the development of Community Hubs will help to get the most out of the money, assets and skills that are available within communities and across a range of services. They will place the emphasis on prevention, early help and integration.

Our Community Hubs will support the re-design of existing face to face customer focused services, including Shropshire Council’s libraries and Customer Service Points, to provide places that residents can easily get information and advice that both enables them to help others within their community.
